Making the Right Care Decision for Your Loved One
Navigating elder care is overwhelming. We're here to help — even before you become a resident.
At Pure Golden Heart, we're here to help — even before you become a resident. Our care planning guidance helps families understand their options, ask the right questions, and make confident decisions.
Adult family homes (AFHs) are licensed residential homes that provide personalized care for a small number of residents — typically 4 to 6 — in a true home environment. Unlike larger nursing homes or assisted living facilities, AFHs offer 1:1 attention, consistent caregivers, and a warm, family-style setting. Many families prefer AFHs for the intimacy, dignity, and individualized care they offer.
Common signs include difficulty with daily tasks (bathing, dressing, cooking), missed medications, increasing forgetfulness, changes in hygiene or appearance, recent falls, weight loss, social isolation, or growing safety concerns at home. These changes are normal — and reaching out for support is a loving step, not a failure.
Tour in person. Notice the warmth of the staff, the cleanliness of the home, and how residents are treated. Ask about caregiver-to-resident ratios, training, turnover, and how care plans are developed. Watch for genuine smiles, calm energy, and residents who look engaged — not warehoused.
Adult family home care is typically priced monthly and varies based on level of care needed. Long-term care insurance often covers a portion of costs. Medicaid may cover care for qualifying residents. Medicare generally does not cover long-term care but may cover short-term skilled needs. We're happy to walk you through your options.
Start with love, not logistics. Acknowledge their independence and history. Listen first. Share your concerns gently using specific examples. Frame care as added support — not loss of freedom. Involve them in every decision. It often takes more than one conversation, and that's okay.
